Essential Quilling Materials & Tools – A Beginner's Guide

Quilling, also known as paper filigree, is a delicate and beautiful art form that transforms strips of paper into decorative designs. Whether you're just starting out or already exploring advanced techniques, the right tools can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable.

1. Paper

For the base surface, I use Brustro Mixed Media 250gsm paper, which provides a sturdy foundation for quilling designs. I also cut 5mm white Quilling strips from the same paper.

2. Paper Strips

The foundation of all quilling projects. These are narrow paper strips, usually ranging from 3mm to 10mm in width and 120-150gsm in thickness. You can either buy pre-cut strips or cut your own using colored chart paper or cardstock. Bright colors and even cutting are key for neat results.

3. Super Quiller Machine

A battery-operated automatic quilling tool that rolls strips into perfect coils effortlessly. Ideal for reducing hand strain and saving time, especially when working on larger projects.

4. Quilling Needle

The most basic and essential tool for beginners. It features a slotted tip where the strip is inserted and rolled into a tight coil. Perfect for precision and control while coiling.

5. Plucker / Tweezers

Used to pick up and place delicate coils with accuracy. It helps you position pieces neatly without damaging the shape or design, especially useful when applying glue.

 6. Scissors

Essential for cutting quilling strips to length, shaping designs, or making fringe flowers. Choose a sharp, fine-tipped scissor for better control and clean cuts.

7. Glue (Fevicol or Craft Glue)

A must-have for sticking coils and elements. Use Fevicol MR or similar white craft glue that dries clear. A fine-tip bottle helps apply just the right amount without mess.

8. Cutter (Pen Knife)

Perfect for cutting your own paper strips from chart paper. Use with a scale for precision and clean edges.

 9. Cutting Mat

A self-healing mat that protects your surface while cutting paper with a blade. It has grid lines for accurate measurement and cutting. This is especially useful if you make your own quilling strips or do a lot of craft work.

10. Crimper

This tool adds a wavy or zig-zag texture to paper strips, adding a unique touch to your designs. Just insert the strip and turn the handle to get the effect. It's commonly used in floral and decorative designs.

 11. Quilling Comb

A plastic or metal comb used for making looped and layered designs. You wrap strips around the comb’s teeth in specific patterns to create petals, leaves, and symmetrical designs.

 12. 3D Shaping Tool

Helps in turning flat coils into domes, cones, and 3D shapes. This is especially useful in advanced quilling like miniatures, dolls, and jewelry-making.

13. Quilling Dome (Mould)

A plastic board with different-sized dome cavities. You place your coil into a dome to shape it evenly into a perfect 3D form. It's great for uniform flower centers or rounded designs.

 14. Quilling Board

Also called a template board, it contains different-sized circles and shapes to help you create coils of consistent sizes. Just place your coil in a circle and let it expand evenly before sealing.

15. Quilling Board with Pin Knitting

Quilling Board with Pin Knitting is a versatile tool used to create uniform and intricate quilling designs. It has pre-marked holes and comes with pins that help in shaping loops, petals, and husking patterns. You simply insert pins and wrap paper around them for precise and symmetrical designs. Ideal for floral and lace-like effects in advanced quilling projects.

Used to fix the edges of the paper to a board or table, keeping it steady and preventing any movement while creating artwork.

A paper cutter guillotine is a heavy-duty cutting tool that gives clean, straight, and precise cuts in seconds. It’s perfect for trimming papers, photos, chart papers, and craft materials. Ideal for artists, crafters, schools, and office use.
